Everybody did an excellent job on our unit plans, and I enjoyed having a class with each of you this session! I feel like a lot of you are going to be great friends, I feel like our personalities shine through in our unit plans.  Sarah: I love how you provided so much literature to your students, and immersed them in a lot of the important aspects of English language arts. I loved how your lesson reached Beyond language arts, into emotional skills as well. this would be a great thing to implement in your classroom, as well as a very engaging lesson for sure. I think that this lesson is meaningful, and has multiple purposes. I think you're going to make an excellent teacher next year, especially if you continue to implement lessons like this. Sally: I love it when a teacher incorporates persuasive writing into a lesson. the way that you included a game, makes it so much more fun and engaging for the student. I like how this is something that they can easily connect with, and ...

Close Reading

Image
Unfortunately, I was unable to attend class, so I did my research because I didn't have notes to go off of. When I did research I learned about a method called “close reading.” “ A lot of the time we use close reading to uncover and explore a text’s underlying ideologies—or the ideas embedded in the text’s point of view, ideas that aren’t given (like the laws of physics) but that are culturally or socially constructed, and usually ideas that aren’t universal even within a given culture or society.”  (2024, March 12). I like how this method includes a lot of annotating, and taking note of key passages. I think it's a great way for students to learn imagery and symbolism because they can seek out that information. I like that this method is designed to see all layers of the text, and that way the reader can uncover the true meaning of the author's writing. when students are searching for a particular information it's going to help brighten their critical thinking abilit...

Language Development

Image
Speech and language development is vital in any classroom. The way we communicate with our students, and the way they communicate with each other ensures that there is a smooth-flowing learning environment for everyone. As teachers, we must educate ourselves on language development and the potential discrepancies we may see in language development in our students. We need to be prepared to provide the best possible learning situation for the child struggling with language development issues. The only way we can do that is by researching and preparing ourselves to assist them in any way possible.  Language and speech delays could disrupt communication within the classroom. Communication could become a larger challenge. some individuals may struggle to advocate for themselves, and require certain needs, and resources to communicate their thoughts and feelings. This can make it difficult for a student to be successful in the class, so teachers must try to identify the best way the c...

Singing Literacy Strategy

Image
Incorporating songs/singing into reading lessons can be a very effective method for improving literacy, and helping students meet higher language goals. It can also add a more engaging element to a lesson, getting kids hooked and interested in their learning topic!     I ncorporating songs into literary lessons can help build vocabulary skills. Hearing the words in a repetitive nature and in a more fun format allows students to learn vocabulary words more memorably. I also like how they can hear the word being used in a specific context. Additionally while learning new vocabulary words, it may also benefit students to learn better listening skills. They must listen and recall from memory what words are used in the songs. This can help improve critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Listening skills are crucial that students master, and this is a great way to promote that.  Another great concept that can be beneficial by incorporating singing...

Grand Conversation

Greetings! Happy to be writing another blog about education, and all the concepts we can customize to create a diverse learning experience for all! Today’s topic is Grand Conversation. I remember seeing this phrasing in the texts, but I am not going to lie, I needed a refresher. I went back to the text to dive in and see what else I could find!  A Grand Conversation is a really cool method. It is a discussion method that is used so students can deeply talk about literary elements or bigger more complex concepts. This is often compared with other book discussions, and so on. The topic should be really exciting, and engaging for students. The students should be given loose restrictions and guidelines, and then BOOM… beautiful class discussions!  For me personally, I cannot wait to offer large discussions on readings we do in class. I think it is a great way to apply knowledge of books, and engage my students in reading. I would want to start off with a beginning questions, to ge...

Word Walls: What is the hype?

Image
Word walls can be a tremendous addition to a literacy-based classroom. Adding significant and influential ways of learning new content. They can be used for numerous standards, ideas. curriculums, and topics in the English language arts world.           According to sources, a word wall is a large collection of various words displayed in a engaging way on some sort of bulletin board, wall, or other large display area in a classroom. Adding a word wall creates an interactive activity for students to engage with, the wall includes words that are used during writing and reading activities in class. So essentially, it is a large visual aid used to showcase various meaningful and related vocabulary terms. They use many key features to make a dynamic resource for students. For example, they are used as a visual aid, used to display word collections, illustrate organization of terms, can be used interactively with moving or editable elements, a...
